The role of the European Parliament in Human Rights worldwide: stock-taking for the 2014-2019 legislative term
The World Solidarity Forum invites you to join our panel discussion event: “The role of the European Parliament in Human Rights beyond the EU: stock-taking for the 2014-2019 legislative term”
The European Union’s action on the international scene will be guided by its foundational principles as enshrined in the Treaties. These are primarily: democracy, rule of law, human rights, fundamental freedoms, human dignity, equality, and solidarity. In this regard, the European Parliament plays a role by defending human rights and upholding democracy around the globe.
In order to better understand the work of the European Parliament and its Members, we will discuss the efforts of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) in highlighting human rights violations during committee debates and bypassing urgency resolutions. We will also have the chance to talk about the contribution of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in empowering people and supporting its own laureates, such as Denis Mukwege, Raif Badawi or Nadia Murad, in their fight against social injustices.
In the context of the European election campaign, we believe that it is crucial to explain the achievements of the European Parliament in the 2014-2019 legislative term as well as the challenges for the next five years.
